When I first arrived at MHS there wasn’t a film club. So we decided to start our own club… our only problem was we had no money and no equipment. And it’s impossible to make a movie without money and equipment…. unless you have help. Our help was MEF and their generous grant helped get our club up and running.“
The Maricopa Education Foundation has recently funded “Calming Corners” training and materials for a number of our elementary and middle schools. In response, one of the MUSD teachers has sent us the following update.
I am a 1st-grade teacher at Butterfield Elementary School. Since the Calming Corner has been introduced at our school, I have noticed a huge change in my students! It allows my students a private space to regulate their emotions; when they feel an emotion that is too much for them to handle, they are able to quietly use the Calming Corner then return to their desk. Afterwards, they fill out a reflection sheet with information on what tool they used and how they felt before and after using the Calming Corner. As a teacher, the Calming Corner has helped me identify students who need emotional support. Sometimes students are not comfortable talking to an adult about how they feel or they may not know how to express themselves. Using the data from the reflection sheet, I am able to provide additional support and ensure their emotional well-being. I absolutely LOVE the Calming Corner – I love it so much, my family has a Calming Corner in our home as well! My youngest daughter created one in her room and she picked out her own tools to help herself relax. Thanks MEF!“
